The disclosure that Co-Pilot Andreas Lubitz suffered from depression in his past, does not necessarily mean he was suffering from it on the day of the crash. However, it is a red flag that opens many new questions. Was he on medication and if so, what? If he was on meds, was it of the sort that can induce suicidal thinking? What is done by airlines to be sure they know what meds their pilots are taking? If he was taking illicit substances, what can be done to know about that before it is too late? The magnitude of this tragedy demands, at least, a thorough investigation of all aspects of Lubitz’s state of mind in the weeks and days prior to the crash. It demands a complete examination of the safe-guards being taken to ensure the mental health of pilots is frequently evaluated. Also, perhaps surprise, periodic blood and urine test to detect any unreported medicines or illegal drugs.
