Zantac Trial Schedule

The makers of Zantac (ranitidine) are facing lawsuits alleging the widely-used heartburn medication causes several types of cancer. Most Zantac lawsuits are consolidated in a federal multidistrict litigation (“MDL”) before U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of Florida, the Honorable Robin L. Rosenberg.
The federal Zantac MDL is captioned 20-MD-2924-Rosenberg - In Re: Zantac (Ranitidine) Products Liability Litigation.
Zantac cases have also been filed in the following alternate jurisdictions to the MDL:
Illinois (Cook County)
As of June 2021, certain Zantac cases can also be filed in California state court. Cases in California state court will be a part of the “Ranitidine Product Cases” Judicial Council Coordinated Proceedings (“JCCP”) 5150. The Honorable Evelio Grillo for the Superior Court of Alameda is the judge overseeing the Ranitidine Products Cases JCCP 5150 (also known simply as the California Zantac JCCP). Zantac MDL Trials and Updates | Federal Court Cases (Florida)
September 15, 2021 – Status Conference Hearing.
October 1, 2021 – Completion of process and plan for selecting potential bellwether personal injury cases. This is also the deadline for plaintiffs’ disclosures of disciplines and specializations of general causation experts, and areas of expertise relevant to each expert’s general causation expert report. The parties will meet and confer.
November 1, 2021 – Deadline for defendants’ disclosures of disciplines and specializations of general causation experts, and areas of expertise relevant to each expert’s general causation expert report. The parties will meet and confer.
November 15, 2021 – Plaintiffs’ deadline to supplement the disclosures listed above after reviewing the defendants’ disclosures. The parties will meet and confer.
December 20, 2021 – Defendants complete factual discovery related to general causation and class certification. Also, plaintiffs’ deadline for expert reports on general causation. Plaintiffs must provide three dates for experts to be available for deposition.
January 31, 2022 – Defendants’ deadline for expert reports on general causation. Defendants must provide three dates for experts to be available for deposition.
February 21, 2022 – Plaintiffs’ deadline to submit rebuttal reports on general causation.
April 25, 2022 – Deadlineto complete expert depositions on general causation.
May 9, 2022 – Daubert motions on general causation.
June 27, 2022 – Oppositions to Daubert motions on general causation.
July 18, 2022 – Replies in support of Daubert motions on general causation.
The parties will begin selecting cases for potential bellwether trials after the court rules on Daubert motions.
Zantac JCCP Trials and Updates | California State Court Cases
August 18, 2021 – Plaintiffs provided Plaintiff Profile Forms (PPFs) for 100 bellwether candidates that defendants had chosen from a pool of approximately 700 California cases. That pool consisted of California residents (some are filed cases and others are pending) from Plaintiffs Liasion Counsel and Plaintiffs Executive Committee.
October 18, 2021 – Defendants shall choose ten (10) bellwether trial candidates. The plaintiffs will also select ten (10) of their own bellwether California resident trial candidates by the same date. There will be a total of 20 bellwether candidates (ten from the plaintiffs and ten from the defendants). These candidates will undergo extensive discovery.
March 11, 2022 – Of the 20 initial picks, the plaintiffs and the defendants will each select four bellwether trial picks (for a total of eight). Each side will then have an opportunity to designate a pick from the other side. The remaining five (5) to six (6) bellwether trial picks shall be considered the bellwether trial pool. From the 5-6 picks, the pool will get narrowed down to four total bellwether picks.
March 2022 – October 2022 – Further discovery (fact and expert) will be conducted, including Sargon hearings (expert examination).

- Sargon Hearing is September 12, 2022
October 10, 2022 – First bellwether trial. This will be the plaintiffs’ pick.
February 6, 2023 – Second bellwether trial. This will be the defendants’ pick.
May 1, 2023 – Third bellwether trial. This will be the plaintiffs’ pick.
August 7, 2023 – Fourth bellwether trial. This will be the defendants’ pick.
Between October 2021 – March 2022, the 20 candidates will undergo extensive discovery.
Between March 2022 and October 2022, further discovery (fact and expert) will be conducted, including Sargon hearings (expert examination).
Zantac Trial in Tennessee (Shelby County)
Attorneys have asked for a spring 2022 trial. A date has not yet been set.
Zantac Trial in Texas (Nueces County)
May 2022 – Trial is scheduled in Nueces County. Date pending.
When is the first Zantac Trial?
Based on the latest pretrial order in the California Zantac JCCP, the first Zantac trial is scheduled for October 10, 2022 before Judge Grillo for the Superior Court of Alameda.
The Zantac MDL will likely hold its first trial in 2023, according to Judge Rosenberg’s pretrial order #65. “The Court’s vision is that bellwether trials will be conducted within 9-12 months following Daubert rulings.” Based on the order, that would slate the first Zantac MDL trial for mid-2023.
