On Sept. 18, 2019, a tour bus crash outside of Shandon, California killed a sound engineer and injured seven other members of country singer Josh Turner’s road crew.
The fatal bus crash came shortly after Turner had wrapped up a concert at Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles. Turner and his bandmates were on different tour buses at the time of the crash and were unharmed.
According to media reporting, the bus was on Highway 46 near Shandon at approximately 11:40 p.m. when it left the roadway and drove some 20 yards through roadside vegetation. The bus reportedly launched off a cliff and landed in a sandy riverbed.
Two of the passengers were ejected in the crash. One of those passengers, veteran sound engineer David “DT” Turner (no relation to Josh Turner), was killed in the crash. The other, production manager Richard Lazarus, ended up in the ICU with broken legs, a broken back, and a cracked chest bone. Emergency responders had to extricate the bus driver from the wreckage. Nearly all of the other passengers were hospitalized.
According to Lazarus, members of the road crew were in the front lounge area of the bus when it started to sway and leave the roadway. He recalled that it felt like the bus hit a speed bump and then went airborne.
What Caused the Josh Turner Bus Crash?
An official cause of the bus crash that killed a member of Josh Turner’s road crew and injured several others will likely take a year or more to determine. Among other things, investigators will look for possible mechanical failures, including steering issues or brake problems.
