Eight People Injured After King George Truck Crash

Six students in King George County, Virginia, are lucky to be alive after the school bus they were riding in was rear-ended by a box truck that failed to slow when the bus pulled over to let a student off. The students on the bus sustained minor injuries, and some went to an area hospital following the crash. The drivers of the bus and the box truck also went to the hospital.

Numerous other truck crashes occurred in Virginia in the days surrounding the King George truck crash, with injuries and fatalities as a result. Truck crashes are not uncommon for the state; in 2015, the last year for which data is available, 10.2% of all traffic fatalities in Virginia were from commercial vehicle crashes.

Box Truck Was “Just Hauling” When it Hit School Bus

It was approximately 3:00 p.m. when a King George County school bus that was returning children home was hit from behind by a box truck, in what one witness said, “sounded like an explosion.”

The bus stopped in the 8000 block of James Madison Parkway on U.S. 301 to let students off and was stationary with its lights on when the truck struck it from behind. Virginia State Police Sergeant Keeli Hill said the impact from the collision was enough to cause the school bus to roll onto its side.

There were several students on the bus at the time of the crash, as well as the driver and an aide. Officials report that the students sustained only minor injuries, some of which required hospital treatment.

“The children have been evaluated by emergency personnel at the scene and some have been transported for treatment of minor injuries,” Sgt. Hill told WTVR following the crash.

Tammy Madison lives across the street from where the King George truck crash occurred and said the school bus was dropping off a teenage boy when it was rear-ended. Madison, who was outside looking for her cat at the time, saw the stopped school bus and the box truck barreling down upon it. She estimated the box truck was traveling at 50 mph or more and said that it was “just hauling” when it hit the bus.

Madison worked with others from the motel to help the students, driver and aide out of the overturned school bus through the emergency door at the back of the bus. She recalls the children crying as they were freed, but says her worries at the time were mostly about the truck driver, who was unconscious and “gasping for air.”

The school bus driver and truck driver were flown by Med Flight to nearby hospitals for the treatment of serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

Officials have not given any details as to why the box truck driver did not stop for the school bus, but Virginia State Police say they will charge the driver with reckless driving.

Kerosene Delivery Truck Crashes in Gladstone, Killing One

A 69-year-old Shipman man is dead after he hit a patch of ice and his kerosene delivery truck ran off the road.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:37 a.m. as Andrew Woodson drove the delivery truck in the area of Buffalo River Bridge and the Tye River Road/U.S. 60 intersection.

“The truck ran off the right side of the highway, overturned and struck a tree,” Virginia State Police Trooper B.W. Stanley stated in a news release.

Woodson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. No kerosene spilled from the vehicle in the crash, but the road was closed down as officials worked to investigate the cause of the truck accident and clear the scene.

Reckless Driving Believed to Be Cause of Three-Truck Crash in Southampton County

Virginia State Police believe a distracted big rig driver was the cause of a three-vehicle crash in Southampton County that hospitalized three Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) employees just one day after the truck crash in King George.

Two VDOT vehicles were stopped in the right lane of Route 718 at approximately 9:30 a.m. when the accident took place. One of the trucks was conducting pothole repairs while the other displayed an activated arrow board advising drivers of the lane closure and to merge left. An additional VDOT truck that was not involved in the crash displayed a written message ahead of both vehicles alerting drivers to the closure.

Investigators with the Virginia State Police say that a big rig driver approaching the three VDOT trucks and the lane closure was driving in the right lane. He was looking at a Bluetooth device when he failed to heed the warnings and hit both the VDOT truck with the arrow board and the VDOT truck completing the repairs.

The truck with the arrow board flipped in the impact, and the driver was airlifted to Richmond for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. A driver and passenger from the truck that was doing pothole repairs were also injured, but were treated at a local hospital.

The semi-truck driver has been issued a summons for reckless driving.

Truck Driver Charged for 2017 Camp Creek Crash That Killed Family of Four

The Illinois semi-truck driver who crossed the median and struck an oncoming passenger vehicle in Camp Creek, killing a couple and their two children, has been charged with four counts of negligent homicide and reckless driving.

The accident occurred on April 13, 2017, as the four members of the Gilley family, including 13-year-old Grace and 10-year-old Jack, were on a spring break road trip.

George Sitler, Mercer County Prosecutor, said they decided to file the charges against Bertram Copeland after eyewitness reports led investigators to believe Copeland may not have taken appropriate actions when he lost control of the semi-truck.
