Two California big rig accidents within the last couple of days have left one person dead and another with major injuries.
On Tuesday morning, a crash involving a big rig and a pickup truck hauling a trailer sent two people to an area hospital. The big rig accident was reported at around 9:51 a.m. on the northbound side of Highway 99 in Turlock.
According to law enforcement officials, 24-year-old Javier Zevada, 24, of Mira Loma was driving a Ford pickup truck in the middle lane of Highway 99 when he lost control of the vehicle. The truck ended up sideswiping a big rig, pushing it off the road and nearly down an embankment. The pickup ended up flipping over completely onto its roof, trapping 42-year-old passenger William Thacker of Mira Loma inside the truck.
Firefighters had to use hydraulic tools to safely extricate Thacker, who sustained major injuries in the accident. Michael Thacker, 41, a third passenger who was riding illegally in the trailer that was being hauled by the pickup, was also injured. According to the Modesto Bee, neither Zevada nor the big rig driver sustained any injuries.
Tuesday’s accident in Turlock is still under investigation.
On Wednesday afternoon, the driver of a box truck was killed when he lost control of his rig and collided with a stalled flatbed truck on the eastbound side of Highway 126 near Saticoy. Authorities say the flatbed truck was parked on the right shoulder just before the Wells Road off-ramp when it was struck by the box truck.
According to the Ventura County Star, the box truck rolled several times after impact, then finally came to a rest on its roof. Emergency responders pronounced the unidentified box truck driver dead at the scene. The flatbed truck driver, who has been identified only as a 49-year-old man from North Hollywood, suffered minor injuries in the accident.
