Volvo Trucks North America will recall more than 60,000 tractor trailers in mid August due to potential steering problems. According to the government, a ball socket in the steering system has the potential to separate which could lead to the complete loss of steering control. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported 23 crashes and two injuries involving the steering problem. The recall, which is expected to start in mid August, will affect certain 2001 to 2006 model VNL and VNM trucks.

A 13-year-old was killed when a delivery truck failed to see a stop sign and slammed into a van on Saturday, in Denmark, New York. The teenager was a passenger in the minivan. Another passenger, also 13-years-old, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. The crash occurred when a Lowe’s delivery truck failed to stop at a stop sign on Route 410 and County Route 19 before colliding with a minivan at the intersection. The driver of the delivery truck suffered minor injuries. The fatal crash is under investigation.
Two Killed in Crash Involving UPS Truck

Two people were killed in an accident involving a delivery truck in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday morning. It appears that just after 9 a.m., a UPS delivery truck slammed into the rear of a sedan and both vehicles caught on fire. Aerial photographs of the wreckage show the UPS truck crushing the smaller vehicle. Two people inside the sedan were killed, authorities said. The crash occurred on Highway 249 at Greens Road. There is no word on the condition of the truck driver. The cause of the crash is unknown and it remains under investigation.
Crash Involving Two Big Rigs Kills Four Members of the Same Family

A Subaru Forester carrying four members of the same family was hit by two trucks on Highway 12 in American Canyon on Thursday. All four family members died. According to the California Highway Patrol, the Subaru was hit from behind by a tractor trailer and then hit head-on by a second big rig. The Subaru was crushed by the second impact, which killed a father, his 19-year-old daughter and his elderly parents. The driver of the truck which rear-ended the family’s car suffered minor injuries and the driver of the second semi was not hurt. This crash remains under investigation.

Three people are dead and another 13 injured after a tractor trailer caused a nine-vehicle accident on Interstate 57 near Mattoon, Illinois, on Monday. According to authorities, the truck driver was distracted and failed to see that traffic had slowed to almost a full stop. He then rear-ended a vehicle, starting a chain reaction collision with another eight vehicles, one of which caught fire. Three people inside the vehicle that caught fire were killed, a fourth person in the car was critically burned and has been taken to a burn center. The truck driver was not injured. The fatal collision is under investigation.

Police are on a manhunt for the driver of a tractor trailer involved in an accident in Kentucky which left a man dead. The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday morning on Interstate 64 in Rowan County east of Morehead, KY. According to State police, it appears a tractor trailer struck a man who was standing beside his disabled vehicle on the westbound lanes of the roadway. According to family members, the man was returning home from his son’s high school graduation when he experienced car trouble and pulled over to check on his vehicle. State police say the semi did not stop after striking the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Evidence from the site was analyzed and authorities are now looking for a tractor trailer with damage to its right side.

A man was killed when a FedEx truck crossed the median and hit a passenger car head-on near Lambs Canyon, Utah. The fatal crash occurred on Friday evening when the FedEx truck, traveling on Interstate 80, went through the median into eastbound traffic. The truck then barreled into a car, killing the driver. One person was killed and four others injured on Friday morning when a tractor trailer hit four people who were aiding a stranded truck on Interstate 240 in Asheville, North Carolina. According to police, a truck stalled on the westbound lanes of I-240 at about 1:50 a.m. The driver of the truck along with four good Samaritans attempted to get the truck off the road as it was blocking the westbound lanes. An 18-wheeler traveling on the interstate then struck four people, killing one person instantly. The three other people hit by the tractor trailer were injured, one critically and another seriously. Four people are dead following a fiery crash involving three 18-wheelers and a sport utility vehicle. The fatal crash occurred on Interstate 10 in Louisiana on Friday, after an eastbound semi sideswiped another big rig that was stopped on the shoulder. The eastbound semi then lost control, crossed the median and slammed head-on into a third 18-wheeler and an SUV before bursting into flames. The two men inside the SUV, including an off duty police officer, were killed in the fiery crash. The driver of the eastbound semi and the driver of the westbound truck were also killed. The driver of the 18-wheeler which was parked on the shoulder was cited for failure to properly display warning devices for a disabled vehicle on the shoulder. Two murder charges have been reinstated against Marcos Barbosa Costa, a trucker from Massachusetts whose big rig was involved in a crash last year that killed a man and his 12-year-old daughter. The murder charges were reinstated on Tuesday by a three-justice state appeals court panel in California after they found that L.A. County Superior Court Judge Lisa Lench erred in her earlier ruling to dismiss the murder charges. The decision is based on the events that led to last year’s fatal crash, which occurred as Costa drove his 25-ton, 18-wheel car hauler down the steep Angeles Crest Highway in La Cañada Flintridge, California. Despite ample warnings of failing brakes, including streams of smoke, Costa continued to drive his big rig down the steep highway. The truck’s brakes failed and the truck smashed into a small red Ford, instantly killing the two people inside.

In this case an International tanker truck rear-ended a Honda Civic on Saturday afternoon, killing a 74-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Civic. The fatal crash occurred on state Routes 2005 and 2022 intersection in Covington, Pennsylvania. Two others in the Civic, a woman and a five-year-old child, were also injured. The child was air-lifted from the scene. According to state police, the Civic had stopped because of traffic when it was struck from behind by the tanker truck. The force of the collision was so strong, that the car was pushed forward about 100 feet. The driver of the truck was not injured. An investigation in to the fatal crash is pending.

An emergency room nurse was killed on Monday morning after striking a trailer that had detached from an Allied Waste truck. The fatal crash occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on Sumner County Highway in Tennessee. According to Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Allied Waste truck lost a trash container as well as its trailer. A Honda Prelude, a minivan and another tractor trailer struck the trailer and the empty trash container. The nurse, who was driving the Honda home from a shift at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, was taken back to that hospital where she later died. The driver of the minivan was injured. The crash is under investigation, but no charges have been filed.

The 25-year-old bride-to-be and her unborn child were killed. Her fiancé suffered serious injuries. The accident occurred as the couple headed to Nevada for their wedding. The couple had stopped behind a tractor trailer which had just been involved in an accident when a second tractor trailer slammed into their car from behind. The couple’s car was then smashed into the big rig in front. The young bride was pronounced dead at the scene. There was heavy snow and low visibility at the time, the Utah Highway Patrol reported. An investigation into the tragic crash is pending.
$5 Million Lawsuit Filed by Surviving Family of Bicyclist Killed in Truck Accident

A wrongful death lawsuit was filed on behalf of the surviving family of a bicyclist who was killed in a collision with a truck last year in Maryland. The fatal accident occurred on Aug. 4, 2009, when 67-year-old John R. Yates got caught in a tractor trailer’s rear wheels as he rode his bike south on Maryland Avenue. Yates, died at the scene. According to a police investigation of the crash, Yates was at fault because he was riding in the parking lanes when he tried to pass the truck. According to the Yates’ family attorney, however, a surveillance video shows the truck negligently turning right without signaling. The suit, which seeks $5 million in compensatory damages for negligence by the driver of the truck and the company he works for, was filed on Wednesday in Baltimore City Circuit Court.

The crash occurred on Wednesday morning when a dump truck attempted to steer onto the shoulder. The truck then struck a box truck and overturned, spilling a load of dirt on the roadway. According to the driver of the dump truck, his brakes had failed and he was trying to avoid striking the box truck in front of him moments before the accident occurred. Three people were killed on Interstate 10 in Colorado County, Texas on Wednesday when a Peterbilt tractor trailer drove through the center median and into oncoming traffic, colliding with a Toyota Landcruiser and a Chevrolet pickup truck. The crash killed the driver of the pickup as well as the driver and passenger of the Toyota. The driver of the big rig suffered only minor injuries. All three vehicles caught on fire and burned after the fatal impact, which occurred around 7:15 p.m. The fatal accident is under investigation.

Authorities say a tractor trailer struck and killed a pedestrian early Wednesday morning in Fontana, California, and did not stop. The pedestrian, a Hispanic man in his 40s, was found dead by a neighborhood resident at about 3 a.m. No eye-witnesses of the hit-and-run have come forward. Investigators were able to determine that a big rig was involved by studying tire tracks at the scene. The death is under investigation and anyone with information is encouraged to contact police.

According to police, the child was in a jogging stroller being pushed by his mother when the Freightliner turned right and hit the stroller. On Thursday afternoon, a commercial tanker and shuttle bus collided in Springfield, Ohio. Four people were killed and another seven were sent to area hospitals for treatment.
The collision occurred after a Mack commercial truck lost control as it traveled westbound on Interstate 70 at State Route 40. The truck jackknifed and swerved over the median before hitting a passenger car and smashing into the bus, which was carrying nine passengers and the driver.
The driver of the bus was killed, as well as three other passengers. They were pronounced deceased at the scene. The other passengers of the motor coach bus were taken to hospitals with unspecified injuries. The driver of the tanker was also taken to an area hospital for minor injuries, officials said.
Officials investigating the fatal collision have not yet said if weather was a factor in the crash. At the time, many parts of Ohio were covered in up to 12 centimeters of snow.
The shuttle bus, a Chevrolet 17-seat motor coach, was en route to an assisted living facility. It was returning from Creative Learning Workshop, a center that provides vocational services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, when the crash occurred.

Three people were killed when a steel coil fell from a tractor trailer and crushed two cars on state Highway 37 in Orange County, Indiana on Monday. According to Indiana State Police, the big rig was hauling steel coils when it rounded a curve. One of the steel coils then came loose and fell onto the passenger vehicles. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an investigation into the fatal accident.
