Tractor Trailer Crashes in Work Zone Killing One and Injuring Three

The driver of a tractor trailer crashed into a work zone on the Ohio Turnpike on Tuesday morning, killing a maintenance worker and seriously injuring two others. The tractor trailer driver was also injured in the fatal crash. Authorities say the maintenance workers were repairing a bridge 30 miles outside of Toledo when the tractor trailer drifted into the work zone and hit three workers. One of the workers, 53-year-old Forest Fletcher, was killed in the crash. Two other maintenance workers and the tractor trailer driver had to be airlifted to local hospitals with serious injuries. At present, no charges have been filed against the tractor trailer driver. An investigation into the cause of Tuesday's accident is ongoing.

Young Man Critically Injured After Semi Runs Red Light

A 21-year-old man is in critical condition after his pickup truck was sideswiped by a semi Monday morning in Chippewa Township, Pennsylvania. The crash occurred on Route 51 at around 8:15 a.m. Authorities say 21-year-old Jordan Agnello was turning onto Route 51 from McKinley Road when his pickup truck was hit by a southbound semi. Agnello was airlifted to a hospital in Pittsburgh following the collision. All indications point to the semi running a red light at the intersection, authorities said. The semi is owned by PGT Trucking out of Potter Township, Pennsylvania. No charges have been filed against the semi driver, as the investigation into the cause of Monday's crash is still ongoing.

Tow Truck Driver Struck and Killed by Big Rig

A tow truck driver attempting to load a pickup truck onto a flatbed was struck and killed by a big rig just after midnight on Wednesday in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania. The fatal accident occurred on Route 581 near the Interstate 83 split. State Troopers say tow truck driver Andrew Smith, 23, died at the scene. The 63-year-old big rig driver, who works for New England Motor Freight, was uninjured in the accident. At present, no charges have been filed against the big rig driver. An investigation into the cause of the fatal accident is ongoing.

Woman Killed in Fatal Pennsylvania Tractor Trailer Crash

A woman was killed Wednesday afternoon after her car collided with the trailer section of an out-of-control semi truck. Authorities say the fatal crash occurred at around 3:20 p.m. on Robert Fulton Highway in East Drumore Township, Pennsylvania. According to police, a Western Star tractor trailer was traveling north on Robert Fulton Highway when the trailer section swung into oncoming traffic after attempting to make a turn. A woman driving a Plymouth Grand Voyager slammed into the oncoming trailer and an SUV rear ended her vehicle immediately thereafter. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Her passenger sustained injuries in the crash. Authorities are currently investigating what caused Wednesday's fatal tractor trailer crash in East Drumore Township.

One Killed in Five Vehicle Crash Started by Tractor Trailer

A tractor trailer slammed into the rear of a Subaru sedan on Tuesday morning in Pennsylvania, killing the Subaru driver. The crash occurred on the southbound lanes of the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike at around 8:47 a.m. Authorities say the tractor trailer driver failed to stop before heavy traffic and rear-ended the Subaru, pushing the sedan into a box truck and two other passenger vehicles. The Subaru burst into flames immediately after the tractor trailer collided with it. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fatal truck crash.

Tractor Trailer Smashes Into Car on Interstate 78 Killing Two

A 73-year-old man and a female passenger were killed early Sunday morning when their vehicle was rear-ended by a tractor trailer. The fatal accident occurred at around 4 a.m. on Interstate 78 in Bethel Township, Pennsylvania. Authorities say the tractor trailer driver struck the rear of the passenger vehicle, sending it off the road. The 73-year-old man, who was driving the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene. His female passenger was rushed to the hospital where she later died of her injuries. The tractor trailer driver was not injured in the crash. The identities of those killed in the fatal truck crash are being withheld until relatives are notified. Authorities are at this time uncertain what caused the crash. An investigation is ongoing.

Tractor Trailer Crash Victim Awarded $4 Million

A federal jury awarded $4 million in damages on Tuesday to Henry Gfroehrer, a man severely injured in a crash with an overloaded tractor trailer. The crash occurred over four years ago on Route 115 in Plains Township, Pennsylvania, when the driver of a truck weighing in at 36 tons lost control of his rig and slammed into Mr. Gfroehrer's furniture delivery truck. At 36 tons, the big rig weighed more than three times the limit for trucks to be on the road, making the brakes essentially useless. The crash left Mr. Gfroehrer with permanent injuries that prevent him from working. The truck driver and the company that owned the truck, Werner Enterprises, were both found to be negligent in the crash. The verdict should send a strong warning sign to trucking companies that they will be held accountable when they do not meet safety requirements.

Big Rig Failure to Yield Results in Crash, Three Seriously Injured

A tractor trailer’s failure to yield led to a crash that injured three people on Saturday just outside of Hillsboro, Illinois. The crash occurred at the intersection of Buckeye Trail and North Ninth Avenue at around 12:45 p.m. Authorities say the driver of the big rig, heading south on Buckeye Trail, failed to yield when he reached the intersection at North Ninth Avenue. A westbound Dodge Avenger passenger vehicle then slammed into the trailer section of the big rig as it crossed the road, injuring all three people in the Dodge. The injured passengers were rushed to St. John's Hospital, two in critical condition and one in serious condition. The big rig driver sustained minor injuries in the crash. He was cited for failure to yield at an intersection by Illinois State Police. An investigation into Saturday's big rig crash outside Hillsboro is ongoing.

Brother and Sister Killed in Fatal Crash With Dump Truck

Twin siblings were killed Friday afternoon after a dump truck driver lost control of his rig exiting Interstate 81 and struck their vehicle. The fatal crash happened around 5 p.m. in Dunmore, Pennsylvania. Authorities say the dump truck driver lost control on a sharp curve in the road and crossed over a median into oncoming traffic. The truck collided with the 40-year-old twins' passenger vehicle before striking a concrete barrier on a highway overpass. The siblings were pronounced dead on the scene by first responders. The dump truck driver was taken to an area hospitals with unspecified injuries.A pickup truck also collided with the out-of-control dump truck, though the driver and the passenger in the pickup were not injured in the crash. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fatal dump truck crash in Dunmore.

The Columbus Dispactch: Two Dead After Big Rig Slams Into SUV in Columbus, Ohio

A tractor trailer collided head on with an SUV Monday night on Interstate 70, killing the drivers of both vehicles. The fatal truck crash occurred in Columbus, Ohio at around 9:30 p.m. when the westbound tractor trailer drifted across the median into oncoming traffic and slammed into the SUV traveling east. Both the truck driver and the SUV driver were pronounced dead on the scene. Authorities at this time are uncertain what caused the tractor trailer driver to lose control of the rig. What is clear is that the truck snapped a steal barrier that runs between eastbound and westbound lanes on Interstate 70. The names of the deceased have not yet been released as neither victim had photo identification on them. The investigation into the cause of the fatal tractor trailer crash continues.

PennLive: Tractor Trailer Strikes and Kills Man on Shoulder of Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania

A man standing next to his disabled car on the shoulder of Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania was struck and killed by a tractor trailer early Wednesday morning. Local authorities say the man that was killed was tending to his car when the tractor trailer hit him and the disabled vehicle. The fatal crash occurred between exit 77 and exit 80 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. At this time authorities are not certain what caused the tractor trailer accident. The name of the man killed in the wreck will not be released until family have been notified. The investigation into the fatal crash continues.

South Coast Today: Elderly Woman Using Walker Struck by Big Rig in New Bedford, Massachusetts

An elderly woman sustained serious injuries after being struck by a big rig as she crossed a busy intersection in New Bedford, Massachusetts Thursday morning. The accident occurred just before 10 a.m at an intersection known to locals as the "octopus". Witnesses say the elderly woman, who was using a walker, stepped in front of the big rig before realizing the truck was moving. She tried to back out of the way, but she was too late. The front side of the truck clipped the elderly woman and she was eventually run over by one of the rear wheels. Fortunately, a man who witnessed the accident pulled the woman out from under the truck before it could do any more damage. The tractor trailer driver was issued a traffic citation by police for failing to yield to a pedestrian. The tractor trailer belongs to Schneider National, a trucking company based in Wisconsin. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the truck accident.

The Sentinel: Lawsuit filed in 2009 crash death on I-81

The widow of a man killed in a tractor-trailer accident on Interstate 81 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania almost two years ago is suing four companies and the truck driver involved in the fatal crash.  That crash and an unrelated crash in the northbound lanes at virtually the same time caused nearly six hours of gridlock in downtown Carlisle that Friday as traffic was diverted from the interstate at the start of the annual Corvettes at Carlisle weekend.  Ann Dugas, a U.S. citizen residing in Ontario, Canada, filed the wrongful death lawsuit Wednesday in U.S. Middle District Court in Harrisburg, citing negligence as the cause of the crash that killed her husband, Gilles Dugas, according to her attorneys, Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman of Washington, D.C.  Gilles Dugas died Aug. 28, 2009, in a three-vehicle crash just before 2 p.m. when truck driver Dennis Ness lost control of his rig and crashed into Dugas' vehicle.

Widow Sues Four Companies for Husband's Death in Pennsylvania Truck Crash

Baum, Hedlund, Aristei & Goldman filed a truck crash lawsuit on behalf of the widow of a man killed in a 2009 Pennsylvania tractor trailer accident. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania listing as defendants, truck driver Dennis Ness, Eagle Systems, Inc. and Thoroughbred Direct Intermodal Services. The owner of the truck and trailer involved in the crash, Twist Trucking, LLC, and Swift Transportation Company, respectively, were also named as defendants in the lawsuit. “My client wants justice. She can’t bring back her husband, but she can hold these defendants accountable for killing him. Truckers need to be extra vigilant because of the greater damage they can cause in an accident and trucking companies should adopt better systems to prevent driver fatigue,” said the family’s trucking accident attorney, Cara Luther, of Baum Hedlund’s Washington, D.C. office. “The companies and individuals involved in the operation of the vehicles in this accident will be held accountable for this senseless tragedy.”

The Republic: Three Killed in Fiery Big Rig Crash With Multiple Vehicles

Three people were killed Wednesday night when a tractor trailer crossed the center line on U.S. Highway 87 and collided head-on with a passenger vehicle. According to the Montana Highway Patrol, the driver of the tractor trailer was distracted and lost control of the rig before colliding with the passenger vehicle, killing a 36-year-old woman, and seriously injuring another woman and a newborn baby. A Jeep Wrangler couldn't avoid a collision with the other two vehicles and caught fire after impact, killing a 22-year-old and a 25-year-old in the vehicle. The wreck occurred north of Billings, Montana at around 8 p.m. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fatal truck crash.

Merced Sun-Star: Tractor Trailer Slams Into Multiple Vehicles Sending Two to Hospital

A tractor trailer slammed into a row of stopped vehicles on Wednesday afternoon in the southbound lanes of Highway 165. The accident occurred around 2:45 p.m. in Hilmar, California when a big rig stopped in the southbound lane of Highway 165, causing a Mazda Tribute and a Dodge pickup truck to stop behind the big rig. Another tractor trailer driver failed to see that the vehicles were stopped and plowed into the Dodge at 45 miles per hour, causing the pickup to hit the Mazda, which then pushed the Mazda into the big rig. The multiple vehicle accident caused major injuries to a woman driving the Mazda, who had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital. The other injury was minor, sustained by the driver of the Dodge pickup truck. The big rig drivers were uninjured in the multiple vehicle crash. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fatal truck crash.

Pasadena Star News: Fiery Crash Kills Three Women After Semi Rear-Ends Pickup Truck

Three women were killed on Monday morning after a tractor trailer slammed into their pickup truck, causing the pickup to erupt in flames. The fatal truck crash occurred on the South 57 Freeway in Anaheim, California at about 2:46 a.m. According to California Highway Patrol officials, the pickup truck had a flat tire and was traveling next to the slow lane at about 5 mph. A big rig traveling about 55 mph then rear-ended the pickup truck, causing the gas tank to erupt into flames. Three women inside the pickup were killed. The driver of the pickup and the driver of the tractor trailer were not injured in the fatal crash.

Seattle PI: Tractor Trailer Driver Loses Control Causing Fatal Crash

One person was killed and another airlifted to a nearby hospital on Wednesday when a tractor trailer crashed head-on into a passenger vehicle on Interstate 82 near Kennewick, Washington. Authorities say a medical issue caused the tractor trailer driver to lose control of the rig, which drifted over the median and slammed head-on into an oncoming passenger vehicle. The driver of the car, a 60-year-old man, died on scene. The car's passenger had to be flown to a Kennewick hospital with serious injuries. The tractor trailer driver was also injured in the crash and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The fatal truck crash is under investigation.

RGJ.com: Bicyclist Run Over And Killed By Waste Management Trash Truck

A woman riding her bicycle was killed Tuesday morning when she was run over by a Waste Management garbage truck in Reno, Nevada. The fatal truck accident occurred at the intersection of Mill Street and Kietzke Lane at around 9:33 a.m. The driver of the trash truck was attempting to make a right at the same time the woman was attempting to cross Kietzke Lane with a green light. Authorities say the driver of the trash truck didn't see the woman before running her over because she was in the truck's blind spot. The woman died on scene. Authorities say neither alcohol or speed appear to be a factor in this fatal crash. An investigation into the cause of the crash continues.

Fox Channel 11 Los Angeles: Big Rig Strikes And Kills Two People

A man and a woman standing beside their vehicles on the shoulder of Highway 60 in Pomona, California, were struck and killed by a big rig early Monday morning. The fatal accident occurred at 3:15 a.m. on the eastbound side of the Pomona Freeway. The man and woman were standing by their cars on the shoulder of the highway when the big rig veered onto the shoulder and struck the vehicles and motorists before overturning. The man and the woman, of Upland and Riverside respectively, were pronounced dead on the scene. The big rig driver was taken to an area hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Authorities say alcohol was not a factor in the fatal truck crash but the investigation into why the truck drifted onto the shoulder is ongoing.

Fresno Bee: Fresno Man Awarded $3.75 Million For Truck Accident

A 75-year-old Fresno man was awarded $3.75 million in damages after he suffered serious injuries in 2009 crash in California involving a delivery truck. The California Highway Patrol report stated that a delivery truck ran a stop sign and crashed into the man's pickup truck, which then slammed into a light pole. The 75-year-old Fresno man suffered a concussion and a fractured pelvis that required three surgeries. The delivery truck was registered to Interstate Home Services, a contractor for Sears, both of whom were named in the lawsuit. The truck driver was not injured in the wreck.

CNN: One Dead, Five Injured In Deadly Tractor Trailer Accident
A tractor trailer loaded with gravel collided with a bus in Long Island, New York, on Wednesday afternoon, killing a special needs person on the bus and injuring at least five others. The driver of the tractor trailer was traveling east on Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow, New York, when he failed to maintain control at a curve and slammed into the side of a Maryhaven Center of Hope bus which was traveling in the opposite direction. Maryhaven Center of Hope runs several Long Island facilities that assist children, adults and senior citizens with disabilities. The driver of the tractor trailer, as well as several other victims were rushed to area hospitals to treat their injuries. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of this fatal truck crash.

Long Beach Press Telegram: Man in Critical Condition After Big Rig Slams Into Gravel Truck

An 18-wheeler big rig slammed into a gravel truck on the 91 Freeway in Anaheim, California late Tuesday night, critically injuring the gravel truck driver. Local authorities say the crash occurred around 11 p.m. near the Glassell Street exit. The out-of-control tractor trailer slammed into the gravel truck and landed on its cab, leaving the gravel truck driver pinned to his dashboard. Firefighters used hydraulic tools and the jaws of life to pry the gravel truck driver free. He was taken to UCI Medical Center in critical condition. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash.

The Press Enterprise: Tractor Trailer Accident Kills Two in Chino, California

A 41-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl were killed Wednesday afternoon in an accident involving multiple vehicles, including two big rigs, on Highway 60 in Chino, California. The two victims were traveling in a Honda Civic when a flatbed truck reacting to a lane change made by a trucker clipped them and spun their vehicle out of control. The Civic was hit head-on by another car before colliding with the center divider and two tractor trailers. Both victims were Riverside residents. The cause of the fatal crash is not known at this time as authorities continue their investigation.

The Madison - St. Clair Record: Jury Awards Truck Driver and Family Over $3 Million
in Damages from Big Rig Accident

Truck driver Thomas Edwards was seriously injured in a 2007 tractor trailer accident in St. Genevieve County, Missouri when we he ran into part of a rig that had come off another tractor trailer and crossed over the median. Edwards, his wife and the trucking company he works for all sued the big rig driver and trucking company responsible for the accident. Last year a Madison County jury awarded Edwards and his wife $3.3 million and his trucking company $200,000 in damages resulting from the crash. The defense filed a post-trial motion to set aside the verdict, and before the presiding judge could hear the motion, the parties settled out of court. The terms of the settlement are not yet available.
